Not sure about the US, but in the UK you need planning permission for a structure that size.

He's a bit of a muppet for building it without PP tbh :/

The thing is its a fucking monstrosity and even if it had planning permission it deserves to be laser targeted and bombed from space.

What they don't report is that the bloke in question knew exactly what the law is and blatantly disregarded it and publicly said (on TV) that he didn't think the law applied to him so he was going to ignore it.

I'm quite critical of the Planning process in the UK as its a bloated bureaucratic process that is more goverend by the political allience the council holds rather than what is good for the area / comunity but on this instance I utterly agree with the decission that was both made at planning level and upheld at goverment level.

What amuses me is that he will not have to demolish it at his own cost he will also probably have to pay the councils legal costs as well.

In summery the bloke is a moron, he knew from the offset what the implications of his actions were and chose to ride rough shod over the process.

Wouldn't it be best just to fine the life out of him and hit him for 4 years back taxes? Assuming it's safe to live in and doesn't violate local building codes.

We get in more trouble for taking houses down here. Some people are made to find the bits at scrape yards and put it all back together if done with out permit .

He built it and hid it behind hay bales because he knew it would be refused and he hoped that the 4 Year planning rule would kick in allowing him to keep it. He claims he originally wanted to convert a barn but the planners wouldn't aknowledge and process his aplication because it was incomplete.

Fining would be a problem because there's no law in place to uphold it, there is however enforcement action which in this case is demolition. I actualy think he's mental
